In November, a number of the PA team visited the Kigulu Shelter in Kibera, with the Year 8s. This was to donate in kind, some of the money raised by the Bonfire Night, which contributed Ksh 250,615.00 to the PA fund. Items bought and donated included medical items, food stuffs and utensils, all carried through Kibera by the Year 8s and some Kenton staff.

For safety reasons, we went with an armed escort, but I think we would all agree, the warmth of our welcome there meant the guards’ presence soon faded into the background.

The children and staff at Kigulu could not have been more delighted to receive the Kenton goodies, and were grateful at the effort we had made to get them there – stumbling, as we did, through open drains and up and down precarious paths, between huts – that can barely be described as homes. |
It was an eye opener to us all, particularly the Year 8s, as after the visit to the Shelter our group walked through Kibera, down to the dam and back - the divide between the needy and the privileged ever more apparent. |
