European Union Competition

For those of you who received the Kenton Magazine, you mayhave noticed that the cover was painted by Megan White.  This is a copy of a piece of work sheentered in the European Union, Equal Rights for Women Competition.  Megan was one of two Kenton studentswhose work was chosen to be sent to Europe, as part of the Kenyan entry.  Although her piece did not win the competitionit was chosen as the winner of the Kenyan entries, by the Kenyan EU office.  We will miss Megan and wish her all thebest at her new school in Mombasa.

Born Free – Pride of Kenya

In the last week of June, Kenton College took possession ofa big white fibreglass lion. During Wider Horizons, we had decided to join in with the Born Free,Wild in Art project – Pride of Kenya. Mrs Burgess came up with the idea that we should divide the lion inhalf, creating a smart city on one side and a slum on the other.  This was the starting point for thecreation of Pamoja.  We tried toinvolve as many children in the school as possible, with all of them placingtheir handprints in the colour of the Kenyan flag on the mane.  The Year 8 students, together withKigulu students, did most of the artwork on both sides and then the rest of thesenior school helped to finish it off. A number of people contributed to changing the design as the lionprogressed, which made the project so worthwhile.  Alexandra Ngini came up with the name Pamoja which meanstogether and sums up perfectly what we were trying to achieve.

Pamoja can now be found in the Sarit Centre, near to the foodcourt and Woolworths.  He willremain there for 2 months and he will then be auctioned with the other 49lions.  We really hope that theextended Kenton family may be able to get him back for us, while supporting agood cause and helping to protect Kenya’s lions.

Kenton Art Exhibition

After the success of the last Kenton Art Exhibition, our artstudents are madly painting, drawing, stitching and colouring glass to try tomake this year’s exhibition twice as successful.  A number of parents, teachers and relatives of Kenton arealso entering this year.  The exhibitionopens on Thursday 17 September at 6:00pm and will last for three weeks.

What's been happening in the art world!

Over the course of the last year the students at Kenton have been involved in a number of different projects. Last Christmas 2007, the Year 7’s made an individual cracker for every member of the Kenton family for the Christmas lunch. The gifts inside the crackers ranged from pom-pom mice to jewellery and they were a great success. The hall was filled with very loud explosions, as we had to improvise the cracker bangs!

Towards the end of the year the Year 8’s were involved in making some bookcases for Kigulu, they then decorated these with there own designs. It was really good to see students putting so much effort into something that was for someone else! The end results were excellent and I am sure the orphans are enjoying them as well as the books we managed to collect to fill them!

At the start of this year we held a proper art exhibition which not only involved the students but also the larger Kenton family. The students who entered were able to see their work framed and for sale and also knew that half the proceeds would go to them.  It was very successful and plenty of money was raised for charity.  On the opening night around half the pieces were sold! The exhibition is still open for three more weeks so hopefully more students will have the opportunity to sell their work. The exhibition was such a success that we hope to do it again next year.
